Introduction

We are off to.... is our Blog to allow family, friends, and others that are interested to follow us on our extended RV travels.

We aren't full time RVers but like to take extended trips of a month or more as often as we can. We prefer public agency campgrounds like State and National Parks, US Forest Service, etc. We do use some RV Parks if they are the closest or most convenient place to things we want to see or do.

We will attempt to provide information on the various campgrounds we stay in, things to do in the area, and pictures of what we see.

Santa Fe, NM

Friday 10/17

We traveled from Branson, MO to Elk City, OK for an overnight stay on our way to Santa Fe as it was about the halfway point.  When we arrived at the Elk City/Clinton KOA there was a large pipe partially across the drive into the campground.  It turned out to be the top portion of the very large KOA sign.  After we got setup I went up to take a closer look.  The pipe itself is about 30"+ in diameter and the sign on top of it landed on the out building on the left crushing some of it.  It looked like the weld joint failed.  I talked to the lady in the office and she said it happened on Sunday when they had 70-90 mph straight line winds.  That weather system is what we went through on our way to Branson.

I said that they were lucky the winds didn't come from the opposite direction as it would have landed on the office.  She agreed and said that they had a number people and rigs in front of and in the office, all trying to get off the Interstate and out of the storm,  Had it fallen the other way it surely would have killed some and injured several.

I'll say it again, "and they think we are crazy for living in earthquake country".

Sunday 10/19

Old town and the plaza is the attraction for us in Santa Fe so we went downtown early.  We learned that on Sunday most places open at noon and we had arrived about 8:30.  We didn't have to fight the crowds though.

One of the interesting buildings near the Plaza.

The Plaza with the trees in full color.

Art galleries, restaurants, shops with jewelry, pottery, and all kinds of clothing much of it high end or at least expensive.  Not much in our price range or anything we NEEDED.

At least one side of the Plaza is where the street vendors of turquoise and other jewelry, pottery, and a number of other hand made Native American products try to sell their wares.  We talked to one man with small black pottery that was priced from $400-1500.  We decided we had all the pottery we NEEDED.

In talking to him he said that one man had asked the prices and when quoted a price he said it was too expensive for him.  The next man was from Holland and picked up a pot and asked the price.  It was $900 and the man said he would take it.

Everything is laid out on blankets on the walkway for people to browse and hopefully buy.

Church on the Plaza.

Another block facing the Plaza.

Sunday night a thunder storm was brewing all around us.  As the sun went down there were some beautiful skies.  Maybe that is why they call this the Santa Fe Skies RV Park.  It sits on the top of a hill south of town in a desert landscape.

I had the truck serviced on Monday and we went back downtown for a while.  Tuesday we plan to take a day trip to Taos.
