Introduction

We are off to.... is our Blog to allow family, friends, and others that are interested to follow us on our extended RV travels.

We aren't full time RVers but like to take extended trips of a month or more as often as we can. We prefer public agency campgrounds like State and National Parks, US Forest Service, etc. We do use some RV Parks if they are the closest or most convenient place to things we want to see or do.

We will attempt to provide information on the various campgrounds we stay in, things to do in the area, and pictures of what we see.

St. Ignace, MI & Rendezvous at the Straights Powwow

Friday

We arrived in St. Ignace, MI mid afternoon and got situated.  The park has gravel pads with grass in between and Lake Michigan is across a small road to the park's beach/shore access.

All through the upper peninsula we have seen signs for pasties that are a fold over pastry filled with meat, potatoes, carrots, rutabaga and onions or some variation of it.  We decided we needed to try them out so Linda asked the lady in the RV park office where we could get the best pasties (paste-tees).  She said you get pasties in Las Vegas but pass-tees down the road.  So, we got some pass-tees and baked them for dinner.  Pretty good.  They were a way for the miners to get a hot meal brought from home by their wives at lunch time.  I have read that they did the same thing in the gold mines near our home.  I guess miners are miners and they take their traditions and tastes where ever they go.

Below is the view of the lake from our trailer as long as that site isn't taken.

We were a little late getting across the street for the sunset but it was still nice.

There will be fireworks by the bay Saturday night at dusk or a little after so we probably won't be in a position to catch the sunset then.

Saturday

Today we felt the best thing to do was just go into town and see what was there.  We found a couple of nice museums such as the one below located in the old chapel next to where Father Marquette was buried.

The views of downtown.

There is a boardwalk along the shore that is interrupted occasionally by a parking lot or fenced building but all in all a pleasant walk.

This is a view across the bay to one of the three ferry operators that provide service to Mackinac Island.
This is the Star Line and the others are Arnold Mackinac Island Ferry and Shepler's.  Shepler's also provides some other cruises.

This weekend was the Rendezvous at the Straights Powwow.  We went to the park where it was to take place but they were still setting up.  We were told things would get underway about noon so we returned then.

It started with the entry to the circle of about 60 dancers led by a number of native veterans carrying staff and flags representing their particular tribe or nation.

Following them were many women in outfits (we were told they are not costumes, clowns wear costumes).  Each person determines what their outfit will be.  Some were quite fancy and some were more plain.

As you can see, none of the outfits were exactly alike.

Some of the men had some extraordinary outfits with feathers and furs etc.

We assumed that this is one of the senior chiefs and his wife, and yes, that appeared to be his own hair.

The chief, his wife and a medicine man.

At one point they asked all veterans to come into the circle to be honored and be greeted by their veteran brothers.  The man in the center left with the cane had been sitting next to us and it was about all he could do to get into the group.  He must have served during Korea.

Just more of the participants.

Late afternoon the fog lifted enough to see some of the bridge.  Most of the deck is still in the fog.

We did catch the sunset this evening and the rays of clouds were beautiful.

There seems to be a lot to do in the area so we are trying to pick things we will do.
