Introduction

We are off to.... is our Blog to allow family, friends, and others that are interested to follow us on our extended RV travels.

We aren't full time RVers but like to take extended trips of a month or more as often as we can. We prefer public agency campgrounds like State and National Parks, US Forest Service, etc. We do use some RV Parks if they are the closest or most convenient place to things we want to see or do.

We will attempt to provide information on the various campgrounds we stay in, things to do in the area, and pictures of what we see.

Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, ME

We arrived in Bar Harbor Campground about 2 pm on Tuesday as planned. The campground doesn't take reservations, accept credit cards, and lets you pick any available site.  It is the closest campground to the town of Bar Harbor and to Acadia National Park.

After finding a suitable pull through site and getting set up we went back to the office and told them the site number and paid for two days.  We will pay for two more and now plan to leave on Saturday.

It didn't take us long after completing all the campground necessities before we headed to Bar Harbor for a lobster dinner.  I checked out Trip Advisor  restaurant reviews and the one we had lunch at when we were here on our New England/Canada cruise "The West Street Cafe" was rated high.  So, that's where we went and we both chose the "Down Easter Special".  It is lobster chowder, a whole lobster, butter, fries, coleslaw, followed by wild blueberry pie for $23.95.  The lobster dinner is as shown below is $18.95.  We added ice cream to the pie for $2 extra.  Good meal, with great service and a decent price.

It didn't take me long to dig into the meal and I am not wild about lobster.  I like it but just not wild about it.

Wednesday morning we went to Acadia National Park and thought we would go up to Cadillac Mountain first but as we got near the turnoff we could see it was foggy on top.  So we started on the park loop road.  The first stop was Sand Beach.

There were lots of people on the beach, some wading in the surf, some in beach chairs just watching the surf and people around them and others just walking the beach and taking pictures.  We were in the latter category.

Further down the park loop road we pulled off at one of the several pullouts.

We wanted to stop at Thunder Hole as we could hear it on our last trip but due to the weather we couldn't see much.  This time all the parking was taken.  We had assumed that as we were here before the leaves turn to beautiful colors there wouldn't be too many people.  Wrong!  So we went on and will try to see it on another day.

Next we stopped at Otter Point which was pretty with the waves crashing on the rocks and the wild flowers up near the road.

A nice lady offered to take our picture which we appreciated.

The little red balls among the flowers are tiny rose hips.

The pictures below are out on the very tip of Otter Point.

I had worked my way down to the edge of the water over some rocks that were a little difficult to navigate (for me anyway).  I saw a large crack in the rock in front of me and decided I could slip through it.  My legs fit through but that was about all.  I managed to lift myself up high enough to get through the crack.

This is Otter Cove that the road crosses.

Nearing the end of the one way portion of the park loop road and approaching Jordan Pond there is a carriage trail overpass.  We will look into taking a carriage ride if it is a real carriage and not a bunch of seats on a rubber tired wagon.

We had intended to stop at Jordan Pond House for lunch but both parking lots were completely full with many cars circling in hopes of someone leaving.  We will try much earlier on another day.

Then it was up to Cadillac Mountain and a nice day, no fog.  The views of Bar Harbor with a cruise ship anchored and with the passengers tendered to the dock. Tomorrow should be a lot fewer people in town unless another ship comes in.

There are views in all directions from the top.

View of Otter Cove in the distance.

Another shot of Bar Harbor.

We had lunch at the Bar Harbor Inn outdoors.  Linda wanted to have a lobster roll and we thought it would be nice to be where we had a nice view of the water.

The lobster roll which turned out to be some lobster on a very small roll, some potato chips, a pickle, lettuce, a couple slices of tomato and onion.  All for $18.95.  Linda was very happy and I was ready for a real lunch.  I said we paid for the view as it certainly wasn't for the quantity of food.  On the way to the truck we passed a restaurant that had lobster rolls for $6.95

As we finished our lunch people were boarding the four masted schooner "Mary Todd" for a tour.

Linda cooked dinner tonight as I said she had blown the dining budget at lunch.  I have to give her a hard time about something or she gets out of control.
