Introduction

We are off to.... is our Blog to allow family, friends, and others that are interested to follow us on our extended RV travels.

We aren't full time RVers but like to take extended trips of a month or more as often as we can. We prefer public agency campgrounds like State and National Parks, US Forest Service, etc. We do use some RV Parks if they are the closest or most convenient place to things we want to see or do.

We will attempt to provide information on the various campgrounds we stay in, things to do in the area, and pictures of what we see.

East Coast NROA Rally, Kingston, ON

Now that we are back in the US and have internet access we are able to do a new post.  We spent Thursday until Sunday at Rideau Acres RV Campground in Kingston, ON attending the East Coast Rally of Northwood RV owners.  It is a small group as there aren't many dealers in the east.

The RV Park is huge with a large number of seasonal sites in addition to the various sites for vacation travelers.  Our sites were well spaced with full hookups.  It is located on Colonel By Lake which has access to the St. Lawrence via locks that are opened and closed by hand cranking them.  Some of our group went and were able to crank the locks open.  The locks are for pleasure boats.

On Friday we went to Eggquis for brunch before taking the Thousand Island Cruise on the St. Lawrance River/Seaway.  There is an American span to an island and a Canadian span to mainland Ontario.  At the beginning of the cruise we crossed under the American span.

Some of our group enjoying the sights.

Like the islands in Parry Sound there seems to be a home on almost every island.

Some are on a rock above the water.

One of the co-conspirators in the Lincoln assassination hid out on this island but was eventually discovered and found murdered here.

The PA on the boat announced approaching the Boldt Castle and I started getting pictures of it.

Soon I saw the actual castle and the one I was photographing was their boat house!  The castle, below, is being restored.

This is the clock tower and power house for the castle.

Visitors land at this location.

This is the shortest international bridge between the US and Canada.  The rock/island on the right is US soil and the left is Canadian soil.  You need a boat to get to either of them in order to cross the bridge.

Lots of interesting home sites.

Saturday morning we were off so Linda could check out a couple of quilt shops, in opposite directions from the RV park, of course.  The first turned out to be a vacant store in a strip mall.  The other was someone's home that we thought might do quilting.  So the excursion was a bust.

So it was back to start the casserole that Linda was making for the potluck dinner.

The group attending the Northwood RV Owner's Association East Coast Rally.  (Linda's comment): We noted proudly that all the ladies had gray/silver locks.  Most of us agreed that beige tee shirts are NOT a good color for gray-haired ladies, but we wore them anyway.  Thank you NROA for your generosity!

Our potluck dinner Saturday night.

Most have been attending these rallies for several years.  As newcomers we were warmly welcomed and felt right at home with the group.  A really nice group of people from several places (Virginia, New Hampshire, Connecticut, a couple that is more full time than in one place and the host was from near Kingston, ON).

As several, including us, were leaving the next morning this was a fitting end to a great day.

We are now at Moose River Campground near St. Johnsbury, VT.

    1. We saw some barges that had construction equipment that could deliver the construction materials go onto the islands. On Parry Sound there were small barges that could carry a small tractor or excavator to the islands/rocks. How do they do it? With enough money you can build just about anything.

When you have a summer home on an island, boats, and a float plane, money isn't likely a major object.
