Introduction

We are off to.... is our Blog to allow family, friends, and others that are interested to follow us on our extended RV travels.

We aren't full time RVers but like to take extended trips of a month or more as often as we can. We prefer public agency campgrounds like State and National Parks, US Forest Service, etc. We do use some RV Parks if they are the closest or most convenient place to things we want to see or do.

We will attempt to provide information on the various campgrounds we stay in, things to do in the area, and pictures of what we see.

June 7th, Fort Stevens SP, OR, (Fort Clatsop)

My memory of Gracie's and the great clam chowder was not incorrect! Yesterday while chatting with some locals while out on Cape Lookout Mo's was mentioned for clam chowder. I inquired about Gracie's and they confirmed that it used to be the best but it has really gone "down hill" with new ownership. I didn't think I had been that off base so it was nice to hear their confirmation.

We stopped at Mo's in Cannon Beach for lunch on the way to Fort Stevens State Park. Their chowder was good but still not outstanding. They also had coconut cream pie but only one and a half pieces. Our waitress put it all on one plate and charged us for one piece. It was OK but not really the outstanding coconut cream pie that Linda makes. Yum!!!

We stopped at Fort Clatsop National Historic Site to check it out.

Next it was on to Fort Stevens and although there are a number of trails they are all 2 miles plus one way or they just circle the campground which, by the way, has about 500 sites. It's a long way around on the trail and a long way to get to it. As we are moving on in the morning we decided to pass. In additon, with the 5 miles yesterday, we were ready for a little rest.

Most Oregon State campgrounds we've visited have a feature that I'm certain attracts many families; play structures are provided for children and they appear to be busy much of the time.

An interesting aspect of our trip has been an awareness of vintage trailers on the road. We camped next to a young couple who had a 1961 Layton they have completely refurbished in vintage decor, inside and out. I spoke to the young woman and she gave me a peek inside. It was furnished with a porta-potty in its own little cubby-hole, an ice box, pump sink and vintage propane stove. Everything was decorated according to the time period, including the hand-embroidered dish towels!! She and her husband and two small children have been traveling around Oregon for seven weeks in this little gem! Another trailer we spotted in our current campground is an old Aljo, just like one we used to own and traveled with when Kristen was a baby. Welcome back to the "good old days"!!

It has been in the high 50s to 60 today and we did have a very fine mist or drizzle for a short while. Actually, it is quite pleasant. Our weather luck is still holding, and Sadie continues to be a super traveler, just happy to be with us.

  1. Love those old trailers. Oregon looks beautiful as ever. One thing I've noticed is how clean all the campgrounds look. Very inviting!
