Introduction

We are off to.... is our Blog to allow family, friends, and others that are interested to follow us on our extended RV travels.

We aren't full time RVers but like to take extended trips of a month or more as often as we can. We prefer public agency campgrounds like State and National Parks, US Forest Service, etc. We do use some RV Parks if they are the closest or most convenient place to things we want to see or do.

We will attempt to provide information on the various campgrounds we stay in, things to do in the area, and pictures of what we see.

June 8th, Cape Disappointment SP, WA

As we only had about 30 miles to travel to our next stop, Cape Disappointment, we walked out to the point to a wildlife viewing area. People already there pointed out a raccoon off in the distance foraging in the beach sand and a Bald Eagle across the water. There were also many other birds, some diving for food.

At another viewpoint we were able to look back at Astoria and the bridge across the Columbia River. It is 4 miles long. If you click on the picture to enlarge it you may be able to see it at the waterline in the distance.

From Fort Stevens we did a little shopping in Astoria for a few grocery items before crossing the river into Washington. We weren't in a hurry as we couldn't check in until 1 pm.

Our campsite.

In reading about things to do in the area Linda noticed that Ilwaco (the town just outside the park) has a Market Day every Saturday during the spring and summer. No question....we were going!! It was actually warm enough for short sleeves! The booths were situated right on the waterfront and items for sale included many that were hand-made by Northwest artisans. We did end up making a few purchases. There were also booths with fresh fruit and vegetables from the area. We bought some asparagus and Bing cherries, both from the Yakima area.

In the evening after dinner we took a walk on the beach to the north until we came to the bluff where the North Head Lighthouse is located.

There was a young couple camped next to us that had an interesting RV. It appeared to be a University of Washington football team vehicle. After chatting with them, we learned they had purchased a rescue vehicle from a Seattle area fire department and had converted it to an RV/Tailgating Van. It was painted with the UW Huskies colors and logos and even had a large replica football helmet above the cab. The only thing missing were a couple of huskie dogs. I guess for now the two dogs they had will have to do. They had a pair of Honda 90 bikes which were covered with a purple tarp at night. For tailgating it included a fold out large screen TV.

We had purchased firewood for a nice fire ($7 for a tiny bundle) but the wood was green and it was perfect for smoking fish. Once there were some coals going I piled the remaining wood on the fire to get it dried out so it would actually burn without too much smoke. By the time it was producing some fair heat there was no more to keep it going, so we called it a night.
